Story -:
The Tamil Eelam people and the fighters who fought for liberation suffered immense atrocities at the hands of the Sri Lankan army, and various films have attempted to convey these horrors to the world in different ways. In that vein, ‘Salliyargal’ is a film that depicts how the medical wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) operated, their bunker hospitals, the humanity of the doctors who worked there risking their lives, and the brutality of the Sri Lankan army.

When LTTE fighters are wounded while fighting against the Sri Lankan army, bunker hospitals are set up on the battlefield to save them. The protagonist, Satyadevi, a female doctor working in one such hospital, is constantly working without proper food or sleep. Dr. Mahendran is sent from the main hospital to assist her.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan army, planning to easily defeat the LTTE by destroying their medical team, begins to act against the medical services of the fighters.
At the same time, the Tamil Eelam doctors, regardless of whether they are treating fighters or enemies, risk their own lives to save those fighting for their lives. This film, ‘Salliyargal’, vividly and engagingly portrays the service and bravery of such doctors through cinematic language.

Movie Review -:
Sathyadevi, who plays the lead role of Dr. Nandhini, has portrayed the character with great understanding. With measured dialogues, clear decision-making, and wise actions, she has brought to life the Tamil Eelam doctors who fought in the struggle. Her body language and appearance while working in the bunker hospital make her seem not just an actress, but a medical fighter in the eyes of the audience.
Mahendran, who plays the character of Dr. Sembiyan, has shown distinction not only in his appearance but also in his acting. The fact that the identity of actor Mahendran is not visible anywhere adds great strength to his character.

Sethu Karunas, who plays the character of Mathiyazhagan, the heroine’s father, delivers dialogues that effectively convey the emotions of the Tamil Eelam people to the audience. Thirumurugan, Santhosh, and Mohan, who played the roles of the Sinhalese army officers, are all appropriate choices for their respective characters.
The pair of Nagaraj and Priyalaya, who are introduced as lovers, later become freedom fighters and leave a lasting impression on the audience.
The songs, with music by Ken and Eeswar and lyrics by Vairamuthu and T. Kittu, linger in the mind even after leaving the theatre. The background music adds significant strength to the storyline and the scenes.
The cinematography by Cibi Sadhasivam is spectacular. The way the war scenes have been filmed is particularly impressive. All the locations featured in the film give the audience the experience of having travelled to Tamil Eelam.
Editor C.M. Elangovan has edited the film in a way that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats, capturing the mindset and circumstances of the doctors struggling to save lives amidst the war. The art direction by Mujubir Rahman, including the bunker hospital, features many subtle details and nuances. The work of makeup artist Abdul and costume designer Poonguzhali Kittu has brought the characters and scenes closer to reality.

Writer and director T. Kittu has not only presented previously untold aspects of the Tamil Eelam liberation fighters in a very engaging manner, but has also powerfully documented the lives of Tamil Eelam fighter doctors who operate with the noble objective of saving lives without any ethnic discrimination.
Director T. Kittu, who conveys the message that for the fighters, their homeland is more important than their lives, not only through dialogues but also through visuals, creates a great impact on the minds of the audience with many sharp and emotional dialogues, including, “We are sowing our lives as seeds. One day it will sprout and stand free.” in Short, ‘Salliyargal’ is a history that Tamils should know.
