Nivin Pauly is a perfect choice for the role of Justin Davis. As a single man in his mid-30s, he gives a very relaxed and mature performance. His sense of humor and dialogue delivery are top-notch and help generate a lot of laughs throughout the film. Mamita Baiju plays another cute and endearing character. The way he interacts with Nivin Pauly’s character through his eyes is a treat to watch. As he did in ‘Vishwanath & Sons’, he made his presence felt on screen and captured the audience’s attention.

The way he interacts with Nivin Pauly’s character through his eyes is a treat to watch.
Just like he did in ‘Vishwanath & Sons’, he made his presence felt on screen and grabbed the audience’s attention whenever he appeared. Roshan Shanavas as Glixon, Sangeet Pratap as Joel Davis and Suresh Krishna as Baiju created many funny moments with their sense of humour. All the three actors gave excellent performances.
Especially, the ‘Mysore Bagh’ scene featuring Roshan Shanavas was very funny. Most of the other actors have done their roles well. Vishnu Vijay has once again given a good score for a film directed by Krish AD. His bouncy background music took the comedy aspect to the next level. Also, the songs composed by him fit well without disturbing the storyline.
Although there are few songs in the film, none of them seem to slow down the pace. Ajmal Sabu’s cinematography was sweet. Her scenes look beautiful throughout the film.
Akash Joseph Varghese’s cinematography is excellent in the first half. However, his work in the second half should have been even better. In particular, the film would have been more interesting if at least ten minutes of scenes had been cut in the finale. Krish AD and Kiran Josi have jointly written the screenplay.

For a long time, we have been used to seeing Indian filmmakers use the significant age difference between a man and a woman to create base comedy and somewhat crude comedy or to give the film a lewd character. However, in the space of just a week, we now have two films ‘Vishwanath & Sons’ (Tamil & Telugu) and ‘Bethlakem Kutumba Unit’ (Malayalam) that have broken the conventional tropes associated with the backdrop of the age gap between an old man and a young woman.
There are many similarities between these two films. Venky Atluri and Krish AT. Both of them have directed the films as cleverly as possible. The first half is excellent in both the films. Mamita Baiju has played the lead role in both the films. The only difference is that Venky Atluri chose to add family drama and heart-touching emotions in the second half, but Krish A.T., used many comedy scenes to narrate the second half. Yes, in the second half, both the films falter to some extent to make up for the promising first half.
In the movie Vishwanath & Sons, the age difference between the main characters was about twenty years. So, instead of giving a happy ending to the film by giving a justification, the director chose to give an open ending. However, in the film Bethlehem Kutumba Unit, the age difference between the main couple is twelve to thirteen years. We are so used to seeing couples with an age gap of around ten years. So, the age difference factor in Bethlehem Kutumba Unit doesn’t look or sound as strange as it did in Vishwanath & Sons. This is why director Bethlehem Kutbuma Unit chose to give the film a happy ending.
The highlight of the film is that it offers genuine and laugh-out-loud moments at regular intervals. The director and his writing team have used the situations and dialogue skills of the actors to create pure comedy. Bethlehem Family Unit is one of those rare films that delivers a genuine laugh-out-loud moment every five minutes. While many moments throughout the film made the audience laugh, it was the pre-intermission ‘love proposal’ scene that impressed everyone the most. This whole scene was very well written and shot. It really rocked the hall. The chemistry of the lead pair, Nivin Pauly and Mamita Baiju, is one of the best things about this film. Both the actors, with their emotional eyes, make those seemingly mundane beautiful moments more palatable. The director deserves special praise for delivering a very mature love scene.
On the other hand, after the lively first half, the director decided to tell the second half using humor instead of going into the sentiments. Yes, there are genuinely funny moments in the second half as well, but after a point, the story just goes nowhere, one comic after another, and it gets boring. In the pre-intermission scenes itself, we get to know how the director is going to end the film. Because of this predictability, the events of the second half feel boring at times. In particular, the last twenty minutes before the climax seemed a bit stretched. The director’s intention to not overdo the love scene between the lead pair is commendable, but the oversimplified romance between the lead pair fails to give the film the emotional depth it needs. Even the ending of the climax was executed in a very predictable manner.
All in all, ‘Bethlehem Kutumba Unit’ is definitely worth a watch for the genuine entertainment it offers and the brilliant first half. You can enjoy watching this with your friends and family and laugh your mouth off. It may not be as complete as ‘Premalu’ but it is definitely a light entertainer that will bring a smile to your face in most of the scenes. However, the film would have been better if a little more attention had been paid to giving it emotional depth. In short – fun pays off.
