Movie Review -:
Star actor Ajith Kumar’s latest release is a road drama and crime thriller, the mos t interesting aspect of which is the stunn ing landscape of Azerbaijan in w hich the film is set. In Perseverance, A rjun (Ajith) and Kayal (Trisha) are a co uple on the verge of divorce. On their way from Baku t o Tbilisi in Georgia, w here they live, Kay al is kidnapped by a n initially friendly Tamil couple, and Arjun now has to rescue Kayal. The fil m is an adaptation of the 1 997 Holly w ood release Breakdown.
The story begins with Kayal confessing t o an extramarital affair and filing for divorce. To add a touch of misogyny, A rjun’s relentless search for his wife af ter her kidnapping and his willingness to go are repeatedly compared to how unworthy she is – a feature that doesn’t seem to be present in Breakdown.
Perhaps this is director Magizh Thiru meni trying to create a moral dilemma for t he hero. Or, as is customary in Ta mil cinema, male directors seem to be willing to go to such lengths when it co mes to writ ing female characters. Tris ha can do not hing but be embarrassed by her soft-spo ken husband until she is kidnapped and terrorised by a Tamil couple in Azer baijan.
The pair in question are Dixit (‘Action Ki ng’ Arjun Sarja) and Deepika (Regi na Cassandra). Deepika has a ‘persona ality dis order’ in the usual Tamil film attempt to denigrate the mentallyill. Her mental condition also makes her a brutal killer. After Valimai was releas ed in 2022, after se veral delays, the jo ke was that the film h ad more bike st unts than actual plot – due to Ajith’s k nown love of racing -. In Per severance , you could substitute bikes for all sor ts of four-wheelers, and that joke still applies. It’s time someone pointed out to the actor that it’s entirely possible to stunt on camera without draggingu s through a three-hour movie with no thing else to do.
The sprawling sand dunes of Azerbaija n, the small, isolated towns and their r ugged inhabitants all have more inter esting personalities than the film’s pro tagonist. Om Prakash’s cinematograph y is commendable for this. The landsca pe is a welc ome relief from the aimles s meandering of the plot.
In an accidental return to the narrati ve styles of old Tamil films, Ajith is at tacked by various villains throughout Perseverance , which he fights inexplic ably like a professional until the end. The actor pla ys a soft-spoken charact er, not prone to outbursts of emotion like most Kollywood heroes. But even when this aspect of his character is br ought out, Ajith’s performance is as dull as the dull story he tel ls.
The film’s big reveal makes you wonde r why the villains had to devise such a complex plan in the first place, apart from giving various characters a chan nce to lecture Kayal and Arjun at knife point. Anirudh’s background score is h ard to distinguish from the other high-decibel music al variations found in hi s recent films.
Perseverance has the effect of a dark tra velogue. You’re more likely to sear ch for the stunning filming locations a nd the characters of the Azerbaijani a ctors in the film than to recall the actu al plot of the b ig-budget commercial you recently saw.
