Story -:

In Tamil cinema, it is rare to find fantasy films that appeal to both children and adults simultaneously. ‘Drones’ attempts to bridge this gap by weaving together diverse elements—witches, fairies, mysterious murders, and a scientific laboratory. The film, which marks the acting debut of Dravid Selvam (known for the ‘Parithabangal’ series), is directed by R. Raghav Mirthath. Does this magical journey succeed in captivating the audience? Let’s find out.

Kishore (Dravid Selvam), along with his friends Karupatti (Anjali Nair) and Dash (Deepak), finds himself suspended from college and forced to take shelter in a peculiar scientific research facility called ‘Black Hole.’ Unable to leave, they use a drone to observe the outside world. During this, Kishore catches sight of Angel Pakruthi (Siddhi Idnani) and falls in love with her instantly.

However, a major obstacle stands in the way of their romance: Pakruthi’s grandmother, a witch (played by Devadarshini). Opposing their love, she uses her magical powers to imprison Kishore and his friends within a mystical fortress. Meanwhile, a series of mysterious murders in the city becomes a major headache for the police, sparking an intense investigation to uncover the identity of the psychopath behind these crimes.

How do the friends escape from the witch’s fortress? Does Kishore’s love story reach a happy conclusion? What is the truth behind the mysterious murders? The rest of the story unfolds as a blend of comedy and magic, revealing how these seemingly disparate events eventually come together.

Movie Review -:

In our childhood, we likely heard many fantastical tales—stories about fairies, flying saucers, and witches. This film is built around the premise: what if those stories came to life on screen? The director has attempted to blend magical elements that appeal to children with humor and mystery that adults can also enjoy. A key highlight of the film is how it weaves together a world of fantasy with mysterious, real-life events.

The first half of the film spends a significant amount of time introducing the characters and establishing the backstory, which causes the opening portions to move at a somewhat slow pace. However, the narrative picks up momentum after the interval. A succession of magical sequences, comedic moments, and mysterious occurrences keeps the film moving briskly. The events in the final act, in particular, are designed to both amuse and surprise the audience.

The film features two primary settings: a scientific laboratory called ‘Black Hole’ and a witch’s magical castle. These locations have been crafted with intriguing objects, intricate set designs, and an aesthetic that evokes a world of pure imagination—a testament to the excellent work of the art director. The director and the cinematographer have utilized these sets effectively, allowing the film’s fantasy elements to stand out uniquely on screen.

Dravid Selvam, who gained recognition through the ‘Sudhakar Gopi’s Parithabangal’ series, makes his debut as a lead actor in this film. He has made the most of this opportunity, contributing across various aspects—including acting, dancing, and comedy—and succeeds in drawing attention as he strives to establish himself as a leading man. Siddhi Idnani, who plays the character of a celestial being named Pakruthi, draws attention with both her appearance and her performance. It is noteworthy how she adapts her acting to convey a range of emotions across various scenes. Devadarshini, portraying an old witch, adds depth to the character through her seasoned acting; her portrayal of the pain stemming from a life devoid of love—particularly in the final act—is deeply moving.

Satish plays a police inspector tasked with tracking down a psychopathic killer. His character brings a lively energy to the film, whether he is lamenting the absence of a romantic partner in his life or injecting humor into the investigation. The decision he makes during the climax serves as an unexpected twist that also evokes laughter. Other cast members, including Anjali Nair, RJ Deepak, and Kuroshi, have also contributed effectively to their respective roles.

The film is produced by G.M. Morgan, with music composed by Hari S.R., whose background score complements many of the scenes. Jayanth Sethu Madhavan’s cinematography captures the visuals with clarity and vibrant color. Director R. Raghav Mirdath—who previously gained recognition for the film *Bun Butter Jam*—has crafted this movie with the intent of appealing to both children and adults. He has woven themes such as romance, perceptions of outward appearance, and human emotions into the narrative.

A magical storyline that captivates children; natural, effortless humor from Dravid Selvam; a spirited yet emotionally resonant performance by Devadarshini; unique set design paired with colorful cinematography; and a screenplay that gains momentum in the second half, leading to a lively climax. The first half focuses heavily on character introductions, which causes the screenplay to move at a somewhat leisurely pace—a potential drawback for viewers who prefer a fast-paced narrative right from the start.

*Drones* cannot be confined to the conventional genres of romance, comedy, or mystery. The director has attempted to craft a vibrant cinematic experience by blending the magical tales we grew up with—the kind that once captivated our imaginations—with modern technological elements. If one can look past the slow-moving first half, the second half offers a satisfying blend of magic and humor, making it an enjoyable watch for families. All in all, *Drones* invites you to set aside strict logic and take a fun-filled trip into a magical world—perfect for a family outing with the kids!
