Apollo Cancer Centre Leads the Way with India’s First LungLife Screening Program to Combat Lung Cancer
Chennai, December 3 2024: Apollo Can cer Centres (ACCs), a leader in cutting-edge cancer care, has launched India’s first LungLife Screening Program for e arly detection of lung cancer. This gro und-breaking initiative aims to comba bat lung cancer, which accounts for 5.9% of all cancers and 8.1% of cancer-related deaths in India. GLOBOCAN 2020 estimates of cancer i ncidence and mortality produced by t he International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) show as lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer de ath, with an estimated 1.8 million deat hs (18%) in 2020.
The LungLife Screening Program aims at individuals who have the highest ri sk for lung cancer such as: (i) people b etween the age group of 50 and 80 year rs, (ii) asymptomatic (no signs or symp toms of lung cancer), (iii) individuals with a significant history of smoking a nd (iv) people with family history of lu ng cancers.
Early screening through low-dose com puted tomography (LDCT) can aid in e arly detection and significantly impro ve survival rates. Yet approximately 8 0% of high risk individuals have never discussed screening with their health c are providers. It is vital to enhance co mmunication and awareness around l ung cancer screening to enable early d iagnosis and save lives, especially amo ng high-risk population.
