One of the best decisions made by film director Kalyan Varma is to make the film ‘Wild Tamil Nadu’ by focusing on five distinct landscapes of Kurinji, Mullai, Marutham, Neythal and Palai, which have existed since the time of Sangam literature.

This not only helps capture the enormous diversity of the land and its people, but also adds historical background. The documentary, categorizing its wildlife by region, travels organically across Tamil Nadu’s fauna, from gigantic elephants to tiny fireflies. It explains how each organism plays its role in maintaining the ecological balance. We see creatures on the tops of mountain ranges and creatures in the depths of the seas adapting themselves to their environment and living their lives. Survival emerges as a common thread in every landscape and organism. Within this larger story, we also get smaller, intimate stories centered around recurring characters like the Iruvacchi birds, the lion-tailed monkeys, the Baya weaver birds, and the Poonarai. There are also some aspects of human nature in their behavior: the jealousy displayed when a pia weaver steals nesting materials from its neighbor, or the cooperation seen in the mutually beneficial alliance between the striped goby and the benthic shrimp. Instead of stressing the message of the fragility of our ecosystems and the urgency to protect them, ‘Wild Tamil Nadu’ brings that thought out naturally through stories of resilience and hope. Arvind Swamy’s background vocals add warmth and quiet dignity, and Ricky Cage’s music brings life to the scenes.

Movies Review -:
A place where the natural mind of Tamil Nadu comes alive.
Ricky Cage’s musical genius and Arvind Swamy’s soulful voice add great power to this fascinating wildlife documentary that explores the vast wilderness of Tamil Nadu with great sensitivity and cinematic finesse.
The way the film showcases the colorful yet mysterious habitats of wild animals makes the film truly captivating. Each landscape comes alive with stunning visuals, while the camera patiently observes the creatures in their natural environment. From their daily routines and survival instincts, to hunting patterns, breeding, territorial battles and the extraordinary efforts they make to protect their families, this documentary offers a fascinating insight into the hidden world of the forest.

The film is clearly influenced by famous Hollywood wildlife adventure films like ‘Drums of Destiny’, ‘Born Free’, ‘Living Free’, ‘Congo’ and ‘The Ghost and the Darkness’. However, by focusing strongly on Tamil Nadu’s unique landscape and wildlife, it successfully creates a distinct identity for itself. The combination of stunning visuals, engaging storytelling and evocative music gives the film a grand cinematic quality.
Consistent speed is another key strength. Despite the focus on nature and wildlife, the documentary never feels boring or overly prescriptive. Instead, it maintains a sense of interest and excitement throughout the film, allowing the audience to fully engage in every movement and moment.

Watching these majestic creatures roam, hunt, interact and survive in their natural environment is a thrilling experience. The film reminds us that the wilderness is not just a beautiful landscape, but a complex, ever-evolving world ruled by instinct, survival, and the incredible balance of nature.
Featuring stunning visuals, soulful music and engaging storytelling, it is a captivating and deeply engaging wildlife experience that celebrates the untamed beauty of Tamil Nadu and brings its extraordinary creatures closer to the audience.

Background voice of Arvind Samy, this documentary is a must-see for every Tamil in the theatre.
