Story -:

Set against the backdrop of the 1980s and 1990s—an era rife with political intrigue and power struggles—*Ananthankadu* is a grand-scale political action-thriller produced in both Tamil and Malayalam. The story unfolds in the impoverished slums on the outskirts of a state capital during the late 80s and early 90s. A quartet of young men, who operate as a hired gang, rely on violence for their livelihood; yet, they also harbor a deep passion for music. This paradoxical life of violence earns them money and unquestionable power within the spheres of their political masters. Vetri (Arya) leads this group.

The film’s core narrative revolves around how the lives of these men are upended by the complex power struggles and socio-political machinations between their political patron, Thangaraj (Murali Gopy), and the mafia leader, Sampath Rao (Sunil). When their very existence is threatened, the group’s desperate, do-or-die battle to escape this violent environment and protect the people around them forms the gripping remainder of the story.

Movie Review-:

Lead actor Arya delivers a stellar performance, effectively showcasing rugged body language and an intense, aggressive gaze. His dedication is particularly remarkable in the interval sequence and the action scenes.

Nikita Vimal and Regina Cassandra have both grasped the significance of their roles and conveyed their emotions with precision.

Sunil, appearing as the antagonist, is truly menacing with his intimidating performance.

Murali Gopy, playing a politician, skillfully conveys his character’s cunning villainy through his facial expressions alone.

Veteran actor Indrans and Dev Mohan deliver realistic performances in their emotional scenes.

Siddique, Vijayaraghavan, Bose Venkat, and Sarath Appani make significant contributions even in brief appearances, greatly aiding the progression of the screenplay.

Composer Ajaneesh Loknath’s background score is a major highlight of the film; he brilliantly enhances the visuals by blending 80s retro music with high-impact, mass-appeal BGM.

Cinematographer S. Yuva accurately recreates the 80s era through his color palette. The camera angles and shots employed during the action sequences are spectacular.

Editor Rohit V.S. Variath keeps the first half brisk and engaging without any lag; however, the film could have benefited from some trimming of lengthy sequences in the second half.

Ranjith Kotheri’s art direction skillfully brings the 80s-era slums and urban settings to life on screen. Sakthi Saravanan’s stunt sequences are designed with gritty realism—raw and visceral—offering a real treat for action fans.

While Murali Gopy’s dialogues are sharp, the film might have benefited from greater attention to the screenplay in certain areas to ensure better accessibility for the average viewer.

Director Jiyan Krishnakumar has skillfully handled this political thriller, effectively directing a massive ensemble cast. The first half, which unfolds like a fast-paced political chess match, moves briskly without any unnecessary lag. However, a minor weakness lies in the second half, where some lengthy political dialogues tend to become slightly tedious. The technical crew fully grasped the director’s vision and contributed their best efforts. The director has successfully and elegantly portrayed a blend of emotions—ranging from violence and politics to friendship—on screen.

All in all, *Ananthankadu*, produced by S. Vinoth Kumar, is a solid political action thriller.
