Set against the backdrop of 1970s Tamil Nadu, Lakshmikanthan Kolai Vazhakku is a gripping prison drama that unfolds across two parallel timelines.
On the eve of a condemned prisoner’s execution, a judge, a jailer, and an aging hangman are each forced to confront their own understanding of justice, guilt, and humanity. At the center of the story is Arivumathi, a young man convicted of murdering Lakshmikanthan.
As the night progresses, the narrative travels back to reveal how an intelligent, compassionate youth from an impoverished family is gradually pushed by circumstance, desperation, and the choices he makes into becoming a convicted murderer.

Is capital punishment a punishment for a criminal? Not a failure of a society? “Lakshmikantan murder case” has become a film that will leave the biggest question in the minds of the audience.
Director Dayal Padmanabhan has created a powerful film based on an ordinary murder case that deals with justice, humanity, crime, punishment and conscience. The screenplay moves seamlessly from the first scene to the final scene, the biggest strength of this film is the screenplay and dialogues. Each scene is set up to build anticipation for the next scene. Kavita Bharti and Dayal Padmanaban’s co-written verses are thought-provoking and mind-blowing at many points.
Director Dayal Padmanabhan has crafted each scene very elegantly and emotionally. The way the scenes are set up in such a way that only what the story needs to be told without unnecessary commercial compromises is commendable. Especially the idea that he presents from a humanistic point of view, focusing on the death penalty, remains in the mind for a long time. Is capital punishment really necessary? He strongly raises the question to the audience.
In terms of acting, the biggest surprise of this film is Rangaraj Pandey. So far known only as a political critic, he has given life to his character in this film and brought out the talented actor in him to the fullest. His body language, delivery of dialogues, expression of emotions all show the maturity of an accomplished actor. This character is an important pillar of the film.
Similarly, Maran, who was introduced to the audience as a comedian, has Asathi in a completely different character role. His natural acting is mind boggling at many points. Beyond comedy, he has also proven himself as a great character actor.
The protagonist, Vetri, expresses the pain and agony of the character Vidumati very naturally and impresses the fans. The heroine Brigida Saga gives the quiet, believable performance her character needs. Other actors like Saravanan, Lissy Antony, Aruvi Madan, Kanya Bharti, Subramaniam Siva and others have all contributed well.
Music composer Darbukha Siva is the biggest strength of this film. The songs travel together with the story. Especially the background music heightens the emotions in many scenes and further strengthens the impact of the film.
Cinematographer M.V. Panneerselvam has beautifully recreated the 1970s era on screen. Every frame is a feast for the eyes. Without affecting the feelings of the story at any place, he has given a suitable cinematography and has further enhanced the quality of the film.
All in all “Latshumikandan Murder Case” is not an ordinary murder case film. A quality film that provokes a deep debate on humanity and justice. All departments such as screenplay, dialogue, direction, acting, music, cinematography have supported each other and elevated the film.
This is a film that fans who love quality cinema must go and watch. Even after the end of the film, its thoughts and questions will travel in the mind for a long time. A masterpiece that every fan who likes to support good movies should not miss – “Laksumikandan Murder Case.”
