Story -:
The film *Viswanath & Sons*, starring Suriya, has been released in theaters today.
Sanjay Viswanath (played by Suriya) is a prominent businessman in Chennai, and Radhika plays his mother. Despite possessing vast wealth, Radhika is distressed that her son remains unmarried. Although Sanjay has both money and good looks—making it easy for him to find a partner—he has personally decided against marriage. He is already 42 years old! Worried about who will look after her son in the future and desiring an heir for the family, Radhika sees her wish partially fulfilled when Suriya has a child through a surrogate mother. However, the child falls ill, and the situation demands the intervention of the woman who gave birth to the baby.
Suriya tracks down the surrogate mother and brings her to Chennai. What becomes of Suriya, who had sworn off marriage? How do bonds form between the child’s mother and Suriya’s family? What decision is ultimately reached? *Viswanath & Sons* is crafted as a compelling film that keeps the audience engaged throughout.
The film has every chance of becoming a hit with families. It beautifully portrays the noble aspects of various relationships—mother-son bonds, romance, and family dynamics. The initially lighthearted relationship between the mother (Radhika) and son (Suriya) takes an emotional turn at one point, moving the audience to tears. Meanwhile, the second half skillfully captures the internal conflict of Sanjay Viswanath, who is initially opposed to marriage but finds himself gradually warming up to the idea.
The film goes beyond merely exploring the issue of age gaps in romance; it touches upon other themes and concludes with a clever climax.
However, there are occasional pacing issues in both the first and second halves. Yet, the intriguing sequences that keep the audience wondering “what happens next” effectively overshadow these flaws. While the large cast brings with it some minor shortcomings, they do not detract from the story itself.
The film is filled with touching moments: Suriya’s dialogues regarding arrogance born of wealth; the intense portrayal of the father-son bond; Radhika’s loving acceptance of another family despite her initial disappointment over her husband’s decision; and Suriya treating his employees like brothers. Humorous scenes—such as Suriya making time for his son and the playful antics of Mamitha Baiju alongside Radhika—also work well.
Actor Suriya has been focusing on unique storylines, and *Viswanath & Sons* certainly deserves a place among his best films. He effectively conveys a wide range of emotions: a decisive businessman, a father to a motherless son, a devoted son to his mother, and a man trying to fend off the persistent advances of Mamitha Baiju. The scenes where Suriya sheds tears following a loss after the interval are deeply moving. After a long time, he has delivered a family-oriented film that truly celebrates him.
Actress Mamitha Baiju plays a pivotal role in bringing the story to life. She displays fantastic body language, effortlessly making the audience both laugh and cry. She shows great promise as an actress with a long career ahead of her; her charisma is truly astonishing. She captivates the audience with her portrayal of a spirited young woman who speaks her mind openly, and through the expressive looks she gives when addressing Radhika as “Aunt.” Her performance is so compelling that even those who might not have previously liked her will find themselves won over. While one might initially question the wisdom of dropping out of studies to marry Suriya, the unfolding scenes—where she suggests continuing her education after marriage—make the audience root for their romance. The scenes where she pleads with Suriya, insisting that the twenty-year age gap doesn’t matter to her, evoke genuine empathy.
Actress Radhika Sarathkumar has landed another excellent role. From calling Suriya “Sanjay Kannu” to sharing moments that make the audience laugh and cry alongside Mamitha Baiju, she delivers a memorable performance. Actors Sunil Reddy and Raveena Tandon have also contributed significantly.
Nimish Ravi’s cinematography and GV Prakash’s background score and songs add great strength to the film. The editing of the action sequences is impressive, and editor Naveen Nooli’s contribution is evident in the film’s engaging, fast-paced screenplay. Although directed by a Telugu filmmaker, *Viswanath & Sons* feels like a genuine, emotionally resonant Tamil film. It is undoubtedly a movie worth watching with the whole family!

Lead actor Surya needs no lessons in acting; as always, he captivates everyone with his performance. He beautifully carries the screenplay, effortlessly balancing sternness, the nuances of a hidden romance, and comedy.
Leading lady Mamitha Baiju delivers a performance that rivals Surya’s. Her antics as a spirited young woman are delightful to watch. Actress Radhika Sarathkumar’s seasoned performance is a major asset to the film. Additionally, the performances of the entire cast, including Raveena Tandon and Sunil Reddy, are excellent.
Director Venky Atluri has crafted the film around the romance between two individuals with a 20-year age gap. The way he has woven various emotions—involving children, mothers, and relationships—into the screenplay is impressive. The humorous handling of certain scenes is also enjoyable.
However, the screenplay lacks sufficient engagement, causing even some good scenes to feel sluggish. Furthermore, the emotional connection to the story could have been stronger. The action sequences are terrible.
Cinematography is a major strength of the film; Surya’s home, hospital sequences, and wedding scenes have all been visually stunning. Regarding G.V. Prakash’s music, apart from the songs “Pattampoochi” and the one dedicated to the mother, nothing else truly resonates. The background score could have been better.
