
Sanghamitra ‘Peace Walk’ – Rotary Internat ional District 3234’s United Efforts with Que en Mary’s College to Combat Drug Addictio n

Commemorating the 120th birth annive rsar y of Rotary, the Rotary International district 3234 in association with Queen Mary’s Coll ege organized a ‘Peace Walk’ against drugs with ‘Say No to Drugs’ ca mpaign, on February 23, 2025. Over 2700 participants that included students fro m various Chen nai colleges, the Rotaracact members and the Rotarian families walked from Lady Wel lington School to Queen Mary’s college, sy mbolizing a colective resolve against the menace of drugs and delinquency among adolescents and the youth. Supported by Rotary Club of Madras and District Public Image Team, this massive awareness mov ement endeavours to create a drug free Che nnai(“Bodhai Illaa Chennai Uruvaakuvoam “).
Addressing global drug challenges throu gh a collective community-driven effort like th e Sanghamitra ‘Peace Walk’, Rtn N S Sarava nan, District Governor said, “This day marks a significant moment in history, the found ing meeting of Rotary International, which set the stage for a g lobal effort towards pe ace and under st anding across the world. This walk crea ting an awareness about the perils of dr ug abuse and promoting ‘Peace’, a corne erstone of our mission, amongst th e people, especially the youngsters, is one of t he many events and competitions that w ill lead to our district conference, ‘Sangh amitra 2025’to be held on March 1st and 2nd, here in Chennai”.
Rtn. Kumar Rajendran, Chairman- Rotaract & Peace Walk, said “To combat the rising tide of drug abuse amongst youth, Rotaract, the youth wing of Rotary proposes to organ nize more such community events across Chennai, in the near futu re too. With aware ness campaigns, semi nars and workshops on ‘substance abuse and addiction preven tion’ for adolesc ent children and the young adults studying in schools and colleges, we will not only educate them on the side effe cts of drugs on health, their lifetime conseq uences, the preventive measures, but also o n how to contribute towards building a drug free World”.
Mr. T. Vivekanandan, Assistant Commisione r of Police, Mylapore Zone presided over th e Valedictory function and distributed the p rizes to the participants. Senior Office bea rers of RI District 3234 including Rtn S Ravi, Chairman – Conference, Rtn Vidya Ragu, Dis trict Secretary, Rtn AKS Ganesh Palanivel, C hairman – Public Image, Rtn J Sasikumar, D istrictR Rotaract Representative, Rtn Chella Kr rishna, President, Rotary Club of Madras also participated in the event.
