Story -:
The story is set in the Nellai region. While it is unclear to what extent the local village of Aathankarai has progressed in terms of global competition, the entire village is passionately devoted to football—truly a “Football Village.”
Director Nikhil Premraj’s story begins just as the 2018 Football World Cup is reaching its final stages.
With everyone in the village—without exception—acting as either a fan or a critic of the sport, a group of seven local boys are so engrossed in playing football that they even skip their meals. This seven-member team is the “7 Star Boys”!

Antony Varghese, a young man from the same village, had long harbored dreams of a football career. However, his aspirations were thwarted after he fell in love with Jumana Abdu Rahman—the daughter of an influential man—and incurred the latter’s wrath. Having moved to Mumbai as a result, he returns to his hometown upon learning of his former girlfriend’s impending marriage.
Witnessing the local children’s passion for football, he and his friends decide to step in and help them.
Realizing the boys lack the qualifications for organized football, they approach former Indian footballer I.M. Vijayan to coach them. Although initially reluctant, Vijayan agrees after seeing the children’s enthusiasm and talent; he trains them to the point where they qualify for the district-level Junior Super League.
However, the surrounding community does not make their journey easy. Amidst these challenges, the film delivers a thrilling narrative about whether the “7 Star Boys” team succeeds in their mission, while also revealing the fate of Antony Varghese’s romance.
Antony Varghese, playing the lead, completely sheds his “hero” image to truly inhabit the character. The chaos he creates by barging into his girlfriend’s home during her wedding preparations is a highlight.
Furthermore, he wins everyone’s affection by transforming from someone who initially teased the boys into the catalyst for their success—arranging everything from new footballs and a proper ground to a professional coach.
For I.M. Vijayan, who has previously played villains in many films, this movie offers the unique opportunity to portray a real-life footballer—essentially playing himself.
Although he enters the story only at the interval, every scene featuring him thereafter is electrifying.
It comes as no surprise that Jumana Abdu Rahman, the female lead, captivated Antony Varghese. He truly captivates us as well.
Actors like Lukman Avaran and Balu Varghese, appearing as Antony Varghese’s friends, have done justice to the screenplay with their natural performances.
Young Danish P.K. impresses us not only with his charm but also with his body language and athletic prowess. It is remarkable to see how his immense reverence for Messi keeps him awake at night.
Amal, the captain of this young team, makes an entry with the kind of build-up usually reserved for a hero and conducts himself with the true qualities of a leader—a delight to watch.
It is surprising that Jakes Bejoy, who composes music for major films, agreed to work on this modest-budget project. Yet, the fact that he made no compromises on the music stands as a testament to his talent.
Cinematographer Fayes Siddik’s contribution is a highlight of the film; he skillfully balances the fast-paced lighting and angles required for the sports sequences with an aesthetic portrayal of rural romance.
Director Nikhil Premraj’s talent is truly impressive. Having decided to make a film for children, he has skillfully steered the narrative with that specific focus in mind.
It is also praiseworthy that the film feels authentic and grounded in the village setting, avoiding any artificial cinematic clichés. The climax, in particular, delivers a thrilling intensity that gets the pulse racing.
Just as devotional films are released during the Ayyappan pilgrimage season, this film—centered around the global phenomenon of football—was likely intended for a similar timely release; it has arrived a bit late.
Nevertheless, football enthusiasts can enjoy this film with their families at any time.The ‘7 Star Boys’ are the ‘Little Stars’ of the future!
